About This Format
Flip Frenzy is a fast-paced, timed tournament format where the emphasis is on continuous play. The tournament organiser sets a duration (for example, 3 hours) and designates a bank of machines. Players are matched into head-to-head games and keep playing for the entire duration with minimal downtime between games.
How It Works
Players are assigned to machines for head-to-head matches. When a match finishes, the winner stays on the machine as Player 2, the loser joins the back of a queue, and the next player in the queue steps up as Player 1. This constant rotation keeps all machines active and ensures everyone is playing as much as possible.
Scoring
The winner is typically the player with the most net wins (total wins minus total losses), which ensures fair comparison even if some players have played slightly more matches than others.
Queue Management
The queue size is usually set to around 20% of the player count. If players are waiting too long, the tournament director can open additional machines to shrink the queue. This flexibility allows real-time adjustment of the pace.
Also Known As
This format is sometimes called "Pinball! Pinball! Pinball!" or "P!P!P!" and creates an energetic, social atmosphere with its non-stop action.
TGP Calculation
Without a separate finals component, TGP is calculated as the average number of games played by all players, divided by 2. If a separate finals round is included (with at least 25% of players advancing), TGP is the fewest qualifying games played by any advancing player, plus 1. Adding a finals component generally yields better TGP.
