About This Format

Max Match Play is a head-to-head format designed to maximise continuous play by dynamically creating matches as soon as players become available, rather than organising play into discrete rounds. This eliminates the downtime that occurs in traditional round-based formats where players must wait for all matches in a round to finish before the next round begins.

How It Works

The tournament organiser sets a target number of matches (the "duration") that each player should complete. As soon as a player finishes a match, the system pairs them with another available player for their next game. Every player plays the same total number of matches, and the system ensures players don't repeatedly face the same opponent.

Scoring

Players earn points for winning their head-to-head matches. The player with the most points at the end wins.

Why Use Max Match Play?

Max Match Play was designed as a replacement for Flip Frenzy in situations where the tournament organiser wants to avoid the IFPA TGP penalty that Flip Frenzy incurs. Because every player plays the same number of matches and pairings are controlled, it achieves better TGP grading than Flip Frenzy while maintaining a similar fast-paced, continuous-play feel.

Practical Considerations

The main challenge with Max Match Play is managing late arrivals and early departures, since the format's core principle is that every player completes the same number of matches. Starting positions are also better distributed than in standard round-robin formats, ensuring fairer machine assignments across the tournament.
